Overview of new DeMeritt
Square footage:
- Old DeMeritt: 43,830 Net; 29,978 Assignable
- New DeMeritt: 51,796 Net; 30,401 Assignable
- Note that the assignable space (that space useable by people) is about the same; the difference is now much more space is allocated to things such as HVAC (none in old building), toilet rooms, fire stairs, and so on. The net square footage of all rooms, except faculty and staff offices, has increased.

Floors: the old building had four floors, the new building will have three useable floors and a mechanical penthouse.
Types of spaces: the building has the physics library, one large (180 seat) lecture hall with demonstration preparation room, one medium size lecture hall (80 seat), one small classroom (30 seat), 2 studio classrooms (45 seats each), 4 teaching labs, two conference rooms, two kitchens, one undergraduate lounge, one computer cluster, three offices for graduate students, nineteen offices for faculty and other scientists, one departmental office, and several open areas with seating.
Recycling: 98.19% of the old DeMeritt demolition recycled; 95.25% recycled on the new project construction to date (11/15/07). The Institutional Recycling Network is the company, retained by Harvey Construction Company, that is responsible for managing this effort
